About Thai gold and how to use this site
- What is 96.5% gold and how does it differ from 99.99%?
- 96.5% gold ("Thai gold") contains 96.5% pure gold by weight; the remaining 3.5% is alloyed for durability and the warm tone Thai jewelry is known for. 99.99% (24K) is internationally-traded pure bullion used in investment-grade bars. Reference prices for both standards are published every trading day, so buyers can compare bullion-versus-jewelry costs side by side.
- Why do the buy and sell prices differ?
- The buy price (what a shop pays you when you sell to them) is always below the sell price (what a shop charges when you buy from them). The spread covers liquidity, price risk, and operating overhead — typically 100–300 THB per baht-weight for 96.5% gold bars. Jewelry spreads are wider because crafting cost and design premium are baked into the sell-out price.
- Why does the price change?
- Thai gold prices follow international spot (USD per troy ounce) multiplied by the THB/USD exchange rate. The biggest movers are US Federal Reserve decisions, geopolitical tension, inflation expectations, oil prices, and Thai baht strength. Reference prices are re-published each time these factors shift materially during market hours, which is why our archive often shows several intra-day ticks.
- Where does thongnow source its data, and how often does it update?
- Every price on this site comes from the public reference data Thai gold shops use to set retail rates. We poll every 5 minutes during market hours (Mon–Sat, 09:00–16:00 ICT) and every 30 minutes overnight. The number shown is the most recent published quote — it is not a prediction or a model output.
- Who runs thongnow?
- thongnow is an independent project built to make Thai gold-price data easier to access for retail buyers and sellers. We have no affiliation with any gold shop, reference body, or gold-savings provider. The site’s revenue comes from advertising that has no influence on what data we publish. You can reach the team at [email protected].
- Can I use this data for investment decisions?
- The information on this site is provided for reference and education only — it is not investment advice. Buying or selling decisions are your own responsibility. Before transacting, confirm the live price directly with the shop you’re using; individual shops adjust above or below the reference price based on their own inventory and operating cost.
